Taking Ativan with herbs or supplements that have sedative effects can cause excessive drowsiness and breathing problems. Examples of sedative herbs and supplements that can cause these effects include:.
Using marijuana with Ativan can cause excessive drowsiness or sedation. Some people can have bothersome withdrawal symptoms after stopping Ativan. These can occur after taking Ativan for as little as one week. If Ativan is taken longer, withdrawal symptoms are more likely to occur. Talk with your doctor before stopping Ativan. Your doctor may recommend that you slowly reduce your dosage before stopping the drug completely. If you think you or your child has taken too much of this drug, call your doctor or seek guidance from the American Association of Poison Control Centers at or through their online tool.
But if your symptoms are severe, call or go to the nearest emergency room right away. There are other medications that are often used to treat the same conditions as Ativan. Some may be better suited for you than others. Note: Some of the drugs listed here are used off-label for treating conditions also treated by Ativan. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for a list of the ingredients. Be sure to mention any of the following: antihistamines; digoxin Lanoxin ; levodopa in Ritary, in Sinemet, in Stalevo ; medications for depression, seizures, Parkinson's disease, asthma, colds, or allergies; muscle relaxants; oral contraceptives; probenecid Probalan, in Col-Probenecid ; rifampin Rifadin, Rimactane, in Rifamate, in Rifater ; sedatives; sleeping pills; theophylline Elixophyllin, Theo 24, Theochron ; tranquilizers; and valproic acid Depakene.
Your doctor may need to change the doses of your medications or monitor you carefully for side effects. Your doctor will probably tell you not to take lorazepam. If you become pregnant while taking lorazepam, call your doctor immediately.
Older adults should take lower doses of lorazepam because higher doses may not be more effective and are more likely to cause serious side effects.
